Most Florence chimney calls trace back to the mountains themselves: a liner cracked by freeze-thaw, a cap buried or bent under snow load, or glazed creosote from months of steady burning. We show you what we found, repair it properly, and leave the flue ready.

A chimney in Florence does real heating work at altitude - long burn seasons, heavy snow, and freeze-thaw cycles that never let the masonry rest. This is what we actually find here, and what we check on every visit.
Snow piles deep on roofs and crowns in Florence, and that weight bends caps, stresses flashing and holds meltwater against the chimney for weeks. A cap crushed or shifted by snow load lets the thaw straight down the flue. We check caps, crowns and flashing for snow damage every spring.
Thin air at altitude changes how a flue draws, and a tall mountain chimney behaves differently from the same chimney at sea level. Marginal draft problems that would pass elsewhere smoke here, especially in tight, well-sealed mountain homes. We diagnose draft as an altitude problem, not just a blockage hunt.
Ice forms where warm, moist exhaust meets a cold cap and crown, and in a hard freeze it can narrow or block the top of the flue. Melt-and-refreeze cycles also drive water into every crack the ice opens. A mid-winter loss of draft in Florence is often ice, not creosote.
A mountain flue sitting at deep-winter temperatures holds a plug of cold, dense air that the first fire has to push out. Until it does, smoke spills into the room. That startup problem is worse with a wet, icy or partially blocked flue - all things a sweep and camera inspection can rule out.

Water soaks into mortar, brick and the crown, then expands as it freezes, cracking joints and splitting surfaces a little wider each cycle. Over a mountain winter those small cracks become leaks, loose brick and liner damage. Spring is the honest time to assess it: we check the masonry and flue on camera and tell you what winter actually did.
A flue full of deep-winter cold air resists the first fire until it warms, and smoke spills while it does. Ice at the cap, partial creosote blockage or a liner problem make it worse and slower to clear. If smoking lasts beyond the first minutes, it is a diagnosis, not a quirk - we check flue, cap and liner to find it.
It works harder and fouls faster. Stoves often burn lower and longer than open fireplaces, which lays down more creosote per cord, and stove flues run through more heat cycles in a season. The maintenance answer is the same - regular sweeping and a camera check of the liner - just on a tighter schedule set by how much you burn.
Yes. Thinner air and the height and exposure of a mountain chimney change its draft, and a system with marginal draw will smoke here when it might pass at lower elevation. Tight, well-insulated mountain homes add negative pressure to the problem. We diagnose draft with altitude and the house itself in mind, not just the flue alone.
Check the chimney before the first fire of every stay that follows a long idle stretch, and book a full inspection each season. Idle mountain flues collect moisture, ice damage and nesting, and the first hard burn tests all of it at once. A swept, inspected flue is what makes a cold cabin safe to heat on arrival night.
No — and be wary of anyone who does. Every chimney fails differently, so a phone price is a guess that changes at your door. Our estimates are free: a tech looks at the actual problem, then gives you one clear price before any work starts.
