A chimney in New Palestine works from the first cold night to the last thaw, then sits damp through a humid summer. Deep freeze-thaw, lake moisture and heavy wood heat do the damage here. This is what we actually find, and what we check on every visit.
Homes downwind of the Great Lakes in Indiana can take heavy lake-effect snow and damp while towns an hour away stay dry. Snow piles on caps, meltwater soaks masonry, and a flue that never fully dries rusts its damper and cap. A sound, screened cap matters more here than most places.
Plenty of New Palestine homes burn wood as real heat for months, not decoration, and steady burning lays down creosote - the glazed kind fastest, from low, smoldering fires. That buildup can ignite inside the flue and crack liners. Regular sweeping removes it, and a camera check shows what it coated.
A heavy snowfall or ice storm in New Palestine can bury a chimney cap, load the crown with weight, and leave meltwater soaking into masonry for days. A buried or damaged cap restricts the vent and lets water down the flue. After a big storm is the right time to check the top.
Much of the housing stock in New Palestine pairs older masonry chimneys with homes that have been tightened, insulated and remodeled over the years. That mismatch causes downdrafts and smoke problems, while the aging mortar and tile need checking on their own. Our techs read both problems together and correct the cause.

At least once a year if you burn regularly, and sooner if wood is real heat in your home - roughly every cord burned is a good guide. A long Midwest heating season lays down serious creosote, and the glazed kind is a flue-fire risk. The sweep also checks the liner, cap and damper.
A flue full of cold, heavy air pushes down until it warms, and a blocked cap, cracked liner or tightly sealed house makes the spill worse. The fix depends on the cause - warming the flue, clearing the cap, repairing the liner, or correcting the pressure. We check them in order instead of guessing.
Real enough that sweeping is scheduled around it. Creosote builds on the flue walls with every fire, and a hot fire can ignite the glazed layer, turning the flue itself into a fire that cracks tiles and damages masonry. Annual sweeping, dry wood, and hot rather than smoldering fires all lower the risk a great deal.
Meltwater is the usual cause in New Palestine: snow and ice sit on the crown, then thaw water soaks into split crowns, open mortar joints and failed flashing, showing up as stains, peeling or a damp smell indoors. We trace the entry point from the top down and repair the actual source, not just the stain.
Do not light a fire. Raccoons, birds and squirrels nest in open flues across Indiana in spring and summer, and a nest blocks the draft and holds moisture against the liner. Lighting under a blockage pushes smoke and carbon monoxide into the room. We remove the blockage, check for damage, and fit a screened cap.
No — and be wary of anyone who does. Every chimney fails differently, so a phone price is a guess that changes at your door. Our estimates are free: a tech looks at the actual problem, then gives you one clear price before any work starts.
