Winter in Rankin is long and hard, the housing stock is old, and many chimneys predate modern liner standards entirely. This is what we actually find here, and what we check on every visit.
Ice dams at the roof edge push meltwater under shingles and against chimney flashing all winter in Allegheny County. The leak that shows by the fireplace in February often starts at frozen flashing, not the flue - and it returns every thaw until it is fixed.
Colonial, Victorian and early suburban homes give Rankin some of the oldest chimneys in daily use - hand-laid brick, clay tiles, fireboxes built before modern codes. They reward careful inspection and punish shortcuts, and we report honestly what is sound and what is not.
Some older Pennsylvania chimneys were built with no liner at all, and others carry liners that stop short or crack at the joints. Hot gases and sparks reach mortar and framing through those gaps, so the camera inspection comes before the first fire, not after.
A tall exterior chimney in a Rankin January holds a column of heavy cold air that sinks into the room between fires, carrying creosote smell with it and making the first fire smoky. A clean flue, sound damper and right cap solve most of it.

Not until a tech has seen how extensive the cracking is. Tiles are the barrier between hot gases and the masonry and framing behind them, and hard freeze-thaw cracks them in most older Rankin chimneys eventually. Many cases call for liner repair or relining, which is a real fix.
Usually a cold flue. A tall masonry chimney in Rankin holds heavy cold air that pushes down until a fire warms the flue, so the first minutes spill smoke. Creosote narrowing, a stuck damper or a missing cap make it worse. We check the whole path before suggesting fixes.
Often ice and flashing working together: ice dams push meltwater against the chimney, flashing loosened by freeze-thaw lets it in, and saturated brick passes it through to the wall. The stain shows by the fireplace, but the repair belongs at the roofline and the crown, in that order.
Late summer or early fall, before heating season. Every neglected chimney in Allegheny County seems to surface the same week in October, and that is when schedules fill. A sweep and inspection in September means your first fire is routine instead of a gamble on an unchecked flue.
