Heating season in New Tazewell is real, the summers are humid, and the housing stock runs from old brick to new suburbs. This is what that mix does to a chimney - and what we check on every visit.
Plenty of New Tazewell firewood is pine and mixed softwood, cut local and burned a little green. Softwood fires run cooler and lay down creosote faster than seasoned hardwood does, and the buildup turns glazed and stubborn if a season of sweeping gets skipped.
Freeze-thaw here is milder than up north, but it still works on New Tazewell chimneys every winter: water in a mortar joint freezes on the cold nights, expands, and loosens the joint a fraction at a time. Over years that fraction becomes cracks and leaks.
Older New Tazewell homes have been tightened up over the years - new windows, added insulation, bigger kitchen fans - and a fireplace that once drew fine now competes for air. The result is smoke at startup and spill on windy nights, with a diagnosable cause.
Many New Tazewell chimneys carry more than the fireplace - a gas furnace or water heater often vents through its own flue in the same stack. Cracked tiles or heavy soot in that flue affect the appliance too, which is why our inspection covers every flue.

At least once a year if you burn regularly - and sooner if your firewood is mostly pine or mixed softwood. Softwood fires lay down creosote faster, and humid summers turn that buildup corrosive in the flue. An annual sweep plus inspection is the safe rhythm here.
Burned dry and hot, pine is usable firewood - but in New Tazewell it is often burned green and low, and that is the real problem. Cool, smoldering fires of any wood lay down creosote fast, and softwood loads simply add more of it per fire. Sweeping on schedule keeps it safe.
Usually the chimney top: a cracked crown, worn flashing, a cap past saving or brick so saturated it passes water through. Southeast rain is heavy enough to find all four. We trace the entry point from the top down in Claiborne County homes and repair the source, not the stain.
Yes. In many Tennessee homes the furnace and water heater vent through separate flues inside the same chimney, and those liners crack and block just like a fireplace flue. A blocked appliance flue can spill exhaust into the house, so our inspection checks every flue in the stack.
Yes, just more slowly than up north. Water sits in mortar joints and crown cracks, freezes on the hard nights, and pries the masonry open a fraction at a time. Across Tennessee winters that fraction adds up to loose brick, open joints and leaks that start small and grow.
No — and be wary of anyone who does. Every chimney fails differently, so a phone price is a guess that changes at your door. Our estimates are free: a tech looks at the actual problem, then gives you one clear price before any work starts.
