A chimney in Bertram is not fighting a long winter - it is fighting clay soil that shifts under the masonry, heavy rain looking for a way in, storm damage up top, and long idle months in between. This is what we actually find, and what we check on every visit.
Winters here are mild, but the rain is not - long, heavy rains find every weak cap, cracked crown and failed flashing joint in Bertram. Water down the flue rusts the damper, stains the firebox, and soaks masonry that then dries slowly in the heat. We trace leaks from the top down.
A flue that sits unused for months in Bertram is prime shelter: wasps and mud daubers build in the warm, protected chimney, and birds nest on the smoke shelf. Nesting blocks the draft, and lighting a fire under it pushes smoke and carbon monoxide into the room. A screened cap ends the cycle.
Short burning seasons here encourage short, cool fires - an evening fire lit and let to smolder - and that pattern lays down glazed creosote faster than hot, steady fires do. Even a mild Burnet County winter can coat a flue. Sweeping is fire prevention here too, not just housekeeping for heavy burners.
Long, hot summers bake chimney crowns, dry out sealants, and age cap metal across Bertram, while sudden downpours test every crack the heat opened. Crowns that looked sound in spring can be split by fall. We check the crown, cap and flashing together, because heat and rain work on all three.

Yes, especially the top. Hail dents and cracks caps, storm wind lifts flashing and tears loose caps off entirely, and none of that damage is visible from the ground or the firebox. An open or damaged cap lets rain and animals straight in. We inspect the top, clear any debris, and refit what the storm damaged.
At least once a year if you burn at all regularly. Short, cool evening fires lay down glazed creosote faster than hot fires do, and an idle flue collects nests and debris all summer. The annual sweep clears the buildup and blockages, and checks the cap, crown and liner as well.
Do not light a fire, and do not spray into the flue yourself. Wasps and mud daubers nest in idle Bertram flues, and the nesting blocks the draft, so a fire would push smoke and carbon monoxide into the room. We clear the flue safely, check the liner for damage, and fit a screened cap so it cannot happen again.
Most often a damaged or missing cap, a cracked crown, or failed flashing where the chimney meets the roof. Heavy Texas rain tests all three at once, and heat-cracked crowns give it an easy path. We trace the entry point from the top down and repair the actual source, not just the stain inside.
Yes. The liner keeps heat and exhaust gases inside the flue and away from the framing and rooms the chimney passes. Shifting masonry cracks clay tiles and opens gaps at the joints, letting both escape where they should never go. Liner faults are invisible from the firebox, which is why we diagnose them on camera first.
No — and be wary of anyone who does. Every chimney fails differently, so a phone price is a guess that changes at your door. Our estimates are free: a tech looks at the actual problem, then gives you one clear price before any work starts.
