Most Decatur chimney calls trace back to the place itself: clay soil heaving the chimney a fraction at a time, rain driving in through a cracked crown, or wasps nesting in a flue that sat unused all summer. We show you what we found and fix it properly.

Chimney Cap Installation
A quality stainless cap keeps rain, birds and sparks where they belong. Fitted to your flue, secured properly, and screened against animals. Sizing matters here: too tight chokes the draft on a still night, too loose lifts in the first storm, so the fit is checked from the roof, not guessed. That is chimney cap installation in Decatur, TX, done the way it should be.

A chimney in Decatur is not fighting a long winter - it is fighting clay soil that shifts under the masonry, heavy rain looking for a way in, storm damage up top, and long idle months in between. This is what we actually find, and what we check on every visit.
Much of Texas sits on clay soil that swells when wet and shrinks when dry, so foundations and chimneys move a fraction at a time, season after season. Masonry cannot flex, so the movement opens mortar joints, cracks crowns, and can leave a chimney leaning. We check joints and alignment on every inspection.
Winters here are mild, but the rain is not - long, heavy rains find every weak cap, cracked crown and failed flashing joint in Decatur. Water down the flue rusts the damper, stains the firebox, and soaks masonry that then dries slowly in the heat. We trace leaks from the top down.
A flue that sits unused for months in Decatur is prime shelter: wasps and mud daubers build in the warm, protected chimney, and birds nest on the smoke shelf. Nesting blocks the draft, and lighting a fire under it pushes smoke and carbon monoxide into the room. A screened cap ends the cycle.
Plenty of Decatur buyers inherit a chimney they know nothing about - no sweep history, no idea whether the liner is sound, and soil movement that may have been working on it for years. An inspection before the first fire tells you exactly what you have, what is sound, and what needs work.

Yes - it is one of the main masonry problems we see in Decatur. Clay soil swells when wet and shrinks when dry, moving the footing a fraction at a time. Masonry cannot flex with it, so mortar joints open, crowns crack, and chimneys can lean. Caught early, joint repair holds; ignored, it becomes structural work.
Do not light a fire, and do not spray into the flue yourself. Wasps and mud daubers nest in idle Decatur flues, and the nesting blocks the draft, so a fire would push smoke and carbon monoxide into the room. We clear the flue safely, check the liner for damage, and fit a screened cap so it cannot happen again.
Most often a damaged or missing cap, a cracked crown, or failed flashing where the chimney meets the roof. Heavy Texas rain tests all three at once, and heat-cracked crowns give it an easy path. We trace the entry point from the top down and repair the actual source, not just the stain inside.
Not until it has been inspected. In Decatur an idle flue collects nests, debris and moisture, and the masonry may have cracked from soil movement while nobody was watching. One camera inspection tells you whether the flue is clear and the liner sound - before the first fire tests it the hard way.
That separation usually tracks soil movement: the chimney footing and the house footing moved differently, and the chimney is pulling away. The gap lets rain in at the wall and signals mortar stress through the stack. We inspect the joints, flashing and liner, and tell you plainly what is repairable now and what needs monitoring.
No — and be wary of anyone who does. Every chimney fails differently, so a phone price is a guess that changes at your door. Our estimates are free: a tech looks at the actual problem, then gives you one clear price before any work starts.
