A chimney in Des Moines is not fighting cold so much as water - months of rain, wind-driven storms and masonry that rarely gets a chance to dry out. This is what we actually find here, and what we check on every visit.
Months of steady rain test every joint, crack and seam a chimney has in Des Moines. Water enters at a cracked crown, tired flashing or porous mortar, then travels down inside the masonry. By the time a stain shows by the fireplace, the chimney has usually been wet for a long while.
Dampers, caps, flashing and metal flue parts rust faster in Des Moines than almost anywhere, because they rarely dry out completely. A damper rusted half-open wastes heat all winter, and a rusted-through cap is an open door for rain. We check the metal parts most sweeps skip entirely.
When a hard freeze follows weeks of rain, water trapped in saturated masonry expands as it turns to ice, cracking mortar and splitting brick faces. Northwest chimneys get fewer freezes than mountain ones, but the ones they get land on wet masonry. Post-freeze cracking is a repair we watch for here.
Plenty of Des Moines buyers inherit a chimney that has been rained on for decades with no record of care - softened mortar, a stained flue, a damper of unknown condition. One camera inspection tells you what the rain has done, whether the flue is safe to burn, and what needs repair first.

Yes, given months of it. Brick and mortar absorb water, and masonry that never dries starts to soften, flake and crack. Water also travels down inside the chimney to rust the damper, stain the firebox and soak the flue lining. In Des Moines, water is the main cause of chimney repairs we make - ahead of age alone.
At least once a year if you burn regularly, and after roughly every cord of wood. Damp wood and cool, smoky fires - both common here - lay down wet, tarry creosote faster than dry wood and hot fires do. That buildup is both a fire risk and the source of the sour smell a wet flue carries all summer.
Often, yes, if the frame is sound; a rusted damper that will not seal wastes heat every night whether you burn or not. If the damper is rusted through, replacement is the honest fix. Either way, the rust is a sign water is getting in above it, so we check the cap and crown as part of the same visit.
Very likely. Water entering the chimney soaks soot and creosote, and damp deposits smell musty and sour, stronger in warm weather. The smell is a symptom; the cause is an entry point at the cap, crown or flashing, or saturated masonry wicking moisture in. We find where the water enters and fix that, then clean the flue.
A cap earns its keep here more than almost anywhere. It keeps the bulk of the rain out of the flue, stops storm debris and nesting animals, and slows the rust that constant damp causes inside the chimney. A cap must be sized and screened properly so it never restricts draft - we fit and check them as part of cap repair.
No — and be wary of anyone who does. Every chimney fails differently, so a phone price is a guess that changes at your door. Our estimates are free: a tech looks at the actual problem, then gives you one clear price before any work starts.
