Heating season in Follansbee is real, the summers are humid, and the housing stock runs from old brick to new suburbs. This is what that mix does to a chimney - and what we check on every visit.
Freeze-thaw here is milder than up north, but it still works on Follansbee chimneys every winter: water in a mortar joint freezes on the cold nights, expands, and loosens the joint a fraction at a time. Over years that fraction becomes cracks and leaks.
Much of the older housing stock around Follansbee burns behind clay tile liners in solid brick chimneys - sound systems when the tiles hold, risky when age and heat crack them. We camera-inspect the full flue and tell you plainly what shape yours is in.
This region runs from Appalachian ridgelines to the Atlantic shore, and West Virginia chimneys live in both climates and everything between. Mountain homes burn longer and harder; coastal homes fight salt air and storm rain. The inspection follows the weather your chimney actually sees.
Summer storms drop limbs, leaves and nests into open flues across Follansbee, and the blockage sits there quietly until the first fire of fall. A screened cap keeps the flue open and dry, and a fall sweep clears whatever the summer left behind.

At least once a year if you burn regularly - and sooner if your firewood is mostly pine or mixed softwood. Softwood fires lay down creosote faster, and humid summers turn that buildup corrosive in the flue. An annual sweep plus inspection is the safe rhythm here.
Usually the chimney top: a cracked crown, worn flashing, a cap past saving or brick so saturated it passes water through. Southeast rain is heavy enough to find all four. We trace the entry point from the top down in Brooke County homes and repair the source, not the stain.
Your house is competing with the fireplace for air. Modern furnaces, dryers and kitchen fans exhaust air out, and a tightened Follansbee home cannot replace it fast enough, so the flue reverses and smoke spills. We test the draw, check the flue size and cap, and fix the actual cause.
Yes, just more slowly than up north. Water sits in mortar joints and crown cracks, freezes on the hard nights, and pries the masonry open a fraction at a time. Across West Virginia winters that fraction adds up to loose brick, open joints and leaks that start small and grow.
